BSA 2013 Accreditation and Best Drink Winners Announced - 02/04/2014

The winners of the Beverage Standards Awards were announced at a glittering BSA Awards Ceremony on Monday 14 October 2013 with Dame Kelly Holmes as guest of honour

Dame Kelly Holmes was the guest of honour at the Beverage Standards Association Awards Ceremony at London’s Fulham Palace on Monday 14 October, where this year’s winners were announced.
As with the famous Michelin guides, assessing for these Awards organised by trade organisation the Association was undertaken by anonymous BSA member trained experts providing accurate and impartial assessments. Instead of ‘stars’, the BSA’s ‘cup’ rankings are awarded to different outlets, with five being the maximum. These BSA cup decals (two way window stickers) will be displayed on the doors or windows to show the general public the standard of the outlet. Out of the 211 entries for the 2013 awards, only 10 have achieved the top 5 Cup Accreditation, with 35 entries achieving 4 Cup Accreditation.

Ranald Paterson, chairman of the assessors, Beverage Standards Awards, says “Whether an entry achieved 1,2,3,4 or 5 Cup Accreditation, all were winners in passing the very stringent standards set and judged in person by mystery assessors in 2013. The top candidates were visited two, sometimes three times, over the last six months before satisfying the judges on the final Awards.
“The margin between the top 5 Cup Accreditation and 4 Cup was very close. The final 5 Cup sites all had outstanding characteristics, but they all had four features in common:-
Two, sometimes three, of the three drinks judged on each visit, were so good as to be in final competition for a Best Drink Award as well.
Each offered a choice of all drinks to customers. This meant that at least two coffee blends or single origin coffees were available for espresso and used in other coffee based drinks. Two or three different hot chocolates, often single country origin. A wide range of loose leaf teas, well described in carefully written menus.
A sommelier standard depth of knowledge of drinks, brewing methods and taste characteristics from all staff dealing with customers, eager to advise on what might be best for them.
Almost no faults which could be identified, giving a minimum of at least 95%.”

The 2014 Beverage Standards Accreditation and Best Drink Awards gives a valuable and fair assessment system designed to help raise standards of any establishment serving hot beverages.

The assessment programme has two main aims: -

  • Raising standards across our industry and facilitating a change that helps all participating establishments to get better within their chosen field of operation
  • Showcasing and promoting venues that are delivering exceptional standards.

This dual approach offers those entering the awards an objective, expert assessment of drinks quality whilst taking into consideration, service standards and the environment in which they are being served.

We operate two accreditation processes: -

The 1 to 5 cup Accreditation Programme
This leading accreditation and assessment programme is aimed at evaluating all aspects of your business including environment, facilities, customer service and those all so important beverage standards.
The sponsor for the Accreditation Programme is the 3M Water Filtration Division.

The National Best Drink Awards
Our prestigious Gold Standard Awards which are awarded to the venues that have delivered the most exceptional beverage within one of the drinks category below which are sponsored by: -
Best Cappuccino - Jaguar Espresso Systems
Best Latte - Jaguar Espresso Systems
Best Flat White - Jaguar Espresso Systems
Best Espresso - Kimbo UK
Best Hot Chocolate - Kokoa Collection
Best Tea - Ridgways Ltd
Best Grind and Brew - Foster Hughes Ltd

As the Associations focus is on "Raising Standards" through accreditation, training and resource we will be introducing the following new Awards and an on-going development programme.

BSA "Raising Standards" Award
This is what the accreditation system is all about and the winner will have invested time and effort is raising their own standards. They will have bought into the BSA accreditation process and will have delivered exceptional improvements in all areas.

BSA "Newcomer" Award
This will awarded to venues which have performed well in their first year of taking part in the BSA assessment programme, combining excellent service with high standards. The entrants may have been open for ten years or just opened but they must be completely new to our accreditation process.

BSA "Overall Experience" Award
The winner will have shown exemplary standards in all areas of the accreditation programme and are a true ambassador for the BSA gold standard drinks awards and the Five Cup Accreditation programme.

"Raising the Bar" Assessment Process
The Association will also be supporting the Accreditation process this year by introducing the beyond the Awards assessment programme that allows venues who want to improve their standards further.
A Beverage Standards Association approved regional assessor will be assigned the task to create a "Raising the Bar" development programme. This course will be available in a half or full day module.
